2013 | Aesthetics of Security
Photographic Series | Fine Art pigment print, Edition 3+2AE | Format: 110 x 165 cm
The work series Aesthetics of Security derives from a longer stay in Johannesburg, South Africa. The city has still one of the highest crime rates world wide, due to the bad economic situation of many and mainly black people, which has not changed significantly since the end of Apartheid. This leads to more and more measures to improve security on different levels. In the areas of private housing properties with high walls, electric fencing, video cameras and armed guards are standard – by this means creating areas where the streets are fenced with high walls. On the streets there are only cars or gardeners, guards and house maidens. Creating an atmosphere of a broken tranquillity.
